When students from other countries come to study in New Zealand, it is important that those students are well informed, safe, and properly cared for. New Zealand educational providers have an important responsibility for international students' welfare.

Student Integration at Queen Charlotte College is achieved in various ways:

• A Powhiri to welcome all new students to Queen Charlotte College is held at appropriate times. International students may also receive a Powhiri at Waikawa Marae.
• Placing students in a spread of classes allowing for local students to enjoy different cultures.
• Setting up an initial Buddy System, particularly in Junior Classes.
• Making International Students aware of the extra curricula activities available - sports, music, performance, clubs etc.
• Encouraging International Students to speak about their countries to Social Studies classes, Food Technology, Language classes.
• Attending Assemby each week to provide all International Students with ongoing support and information on school activities. Guest speakers are brought in to speak on counselling services, holiday programmes, tertiary systems etc.

Orientation

Queen Charlotte College offers an orientation programme to help new students settle in. International students can take part in our ESOL language programme taught by two experienced ESOL teachers. Extra tuition in English and other subjects can be arranged - fees to be negotiated.

Out of School Pastoral Care

The International Director will monitor the following:

• Following of school rules.
• Communication with parents or agents.
• Student's homestay behaviour.
• Student's international travel, medical insurance/care, banking facilities and general welfare.
